Why Buy an Electric Van in 2026?

Let's be honest: nobody saw fuel prices getting quite this painful, quite this fast. Here at Loads of Vans, we’re seeing business owners shift their mindset on electric vans from "something to consider" to "something you need to act on now."

If you’re a diesel van driver operating in the London area, you’ll be paying ULEZ charges of  £12.50 per day (that’s £3,250 per year), plus a congestion Charge of £9 per day (based on the new charge of £18 per day minus the 50% discount electric vans are entitled to, so that’s £2,340 per year), and rising diesel fuel costs.

If you switch to an electric van, then your costs will dramatically reduce overnight. That's a potential saving of over £5,500 annually (maybe even more depending on your monthly fuel costs) - and that’s before you even factor in the Government plug-in van grant of up to £5,000.

To accommodate demand, we've made a significant investment in electric van stock precisely because we could see this moment coming. This means we have an exceptional range of electric vans available at some of the lowest prices you'll find anywhere in the UK - and they're in stock at our Sutton-based dealership, right now.

Ford E-Transit Electric Van

The electric version of Britain's best-selling van offers a range of up to 249 miles on a single charge (enhanced battery version) and an impressive payload of up to 1,745kg. How Much Can Your Business Actually Save by Buying an Electric Van in 2026?

Here's a straightforward breakdown of the potential annual savings for a London-based business switching from a diesel to an electric van:

SavingDaily SpendAnnual Spend
ULEZ Charge£12.50£3,250
Congestion Charge£9.00 (50% reduction)£2,340
Fuel Cost (paying for electricity fees only)_____£1,200
Total Annual Saving £6,790

Please note:

These figures are based on 260 standard working days per year. ULEZ saving assumes daily entry into the TfL Ultra Low Emission Zone (£12.50/day for non-compliant vehicles). Congestion Charge saving assumes daily entry into the London Congestion Charge zone during charging hours (£18.00/day reduced to £9 for EVs).

The fuel saving element is an indicative estimate based on typical diesel van running costs versus home or depot electricity charging costs at average UK rates; actual savings will vary depending on mileage, charging method, and prevailing fuel and energy prices.

Charging Your Electric Van is Easier Than You Think!

One of the most common questions we hear from businesses considering the switch to an electric van is largely about charging the vehicle. The honest answer is that it's far simpler than most people expect.

Your three main charging options are:

1. Home or depot wallbox (this is the most recommended option)

A 7kW or 22kW wallbox charger is installed at your premises (work or home) that will charge most electric vans overnight. Plug in when you get back, and wake up to a full battery.

2. Rapid public charging

With thousands of rapid chargers now installed across London and the South East, you can add up to 80% charge in as little as 40–60 minutes while you take a break. The UK's charging network is growing every month, and charging technology is getting better and better.

3. Standard 13-amp socket

In an emergency, any 3-pin household socket will do. Though this is best kept for top-up charging rather than a full charge from empty.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electric Vans

Are electric vans suitable for my business if I drive more than 100 miles a day?

Many of our current electric van models offer ranges of around 186 miles on a single charge. For most businesses operating in London and the South East, this is more than sufficient. Models like the Renault Trafic E-Tech are perfectly capable of handling a full commercial day's work without recharging.

If your routes regularly exceed 150 miles a day, we'd recommend discussing your specific requirements with our team. We can talk to you about larger battery models or extended range options.

How long does it take to charge an electric van?

Charging time depends on the charger type. A professionally fitted home or depot wallbox will fully charge most vans overnight (around 8 hours). Public rapid chargers can deliver an 80% charge in 40–60 minutes. The new Renault Trafic E-Tech generation features 800V charging technology that can achieve 15%–80% in under 20 minutes.

Do I still qualify for the Government plug-in van grant in 2026?

Yes. The Government plug-in van grant (also known as PiVG) has been extended through to at least 2027. Grants of up to £5,000 are available on qualifying large electric vans, and up to £2,500 on smaller models. At Loads of Vans, we apply these grants automatically at the point of purchase, so there’s no extra paperwork needed.

Are electric vans exempt from the London Congestion Charge and ULEZ?

Yes. All 100% electric vans are fully exempt from both the ULEZ charge (£12.50 a day) and the London Congestion Charge (£15 a day). For businesses regularly operating in central London, this alone can save thousands of pounds per year.

Can I get an electric van on finance or lease?

Absolutely. We offer flexible finance and leasing options on all our electric vans. The Renault Trafic E-Tech is available to lease from just £189 per month + VAT. Speak to our Loads of Vans team for a tailored quote.

Is there a Government grant available to help my business install electric van charging points?

Yes - and it's just been improved. From 1 April 2026, the Government's Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grant increased from £350 to £500 per socket. This applies to all installations completed from 1 April 2026, regardless of when you applied.

Funding is available until 31 March 2027, and businesses can claim for up to 40 sockets across all their sites. This means a potential total grant value of up to £20,000 towards your workplace charging infrastructure.
