Workplace Charging Scheme Grant Extended Into 2027: What It Means for Your Business
Everything You Need to Know About the WCS Grant
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WSC) has been extended until 31 March 2027. If you’ve been thinking about adding electric vans to your fleet, this is a great moment to do that. The grant helps you cover the cost of installing EV charging points at your premises. This is a great opportunity to cut costs if you want to go electric.Â
Here's everything you need to know about how it works, who qualifies, and how to claim.
What is the Workplace Charging Scheme grant?
The Workplace Charging Scheme is a government-backed initiative managed by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV). It provides financial support to businesses, charities, and public-sector organisations that want to install electric-vehicle charge points at their workplaces.
The scheme covers up to 75% of the total cost of purchasing and installing up to 40 EV chargepoints (including VAT). The grant rate has now increased from £350 to £500 per socket. That’s a potential £20,000 saving if you decide to install 40 sockets.
The WCS covers both the hardware and the installation costs, so you're not left chasing separate claims for different parts of the job.
Who Is Eligible for the Workplace EV Charger Funding?
To qualify for the WSC grant, you must meet some criteria.Â
You must be a UK business, charity, or public sector organisation
You need off-street parking associated with the premises, and if you do not own you’ll need permission from the landowner.
You must be able to prove that the charging points are for your staff or fleet and not for customers.Â
Your parking spaces need to be suitable for chargepoint installations.Â
The charge points must be installed by an authorised installer.Â
If you are a sole trader and your business is registered under your home address, you can still take advantage of the WSC grant. In this case, you need to show the following things:Â
Your address is listed as your place of business with Companies HouseÂ
Your address is recorded on your business (non-domestic) rate bill issued to you by your local council or Land and Property Services (LPS).Â
In this instance, you still need to use an authorised installer, but you’ll also need a chargepoint that is eligible for both residential and commercial use.Â
What Does the Grant Cover?
The WSC grant covers the supply and installation of the chargepoints at your business premises. This includes the cost of the charger hardware itself and the labour involved in fitting it.
How to Apply for the Workplace Charging Scheme Grant
Applying for the WCS grant is an easy process. All you need to do is use the Workplace Charging Scheme application form. Â
Before starting, make sure you meet the eligibility criteria.Â
If your application is successful, you will be emailed a voucher code within 5 working days, along with the details of your application, including the number of sockets, installation site(s), and expiry date. The voucher will be valid for 180 days, and once the installations are complete, the installer will claim the grant.Â
If the application is unsuccessful, you may appeal by emailing the DVLA at [email protected].Â
Why Take Advantage of the 2027 ExtensionÂ
The extension into 2027 gives businesses more breathing room to plan properly, rather than rushing. That said, grant schemes like this can be amended or closed early if funding is exhausted, so waiting until the last minute is still a risk worth avoiding.
If you're planning to take on electric vans in the next year or two, getting your charging infrastructure sorted now makes sense. It means your drivers have somewhere to charge overnight, which keeps running costs down and makes the switch to electric far more practical day-to-day.
