More than half don’t have an alarm fitted; most are without an immobiliser; and some don’t lock their vans!
Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that 560,000 vans (16%) have been broken into over the last 3 years.
With around 511 vans being broken into every day and the number set to rise with the economic downturn, thieves are finding they can be rich pickings.
However, only 36% of van drivers empty their vehicles every night and only 7% have a van vault fitted.
Some van users are targeted more than once by thieves: over 35,000 drivers had their vans broken into more than once in a 12 month period.
London appears to be the hotbed for thieves targeting vans with 35% of drivers having their vans broken into in the last three years compared to 16% nationally. The areas least affected by van crime are Wales and the Midlands.
Drivers in London are the most security conscious and most lock their vans but they are the worst at emptying the contents! The least security conscious are drivers in the South East and Anglia who leave their vans unlocked.
